Football Pitch Watering

Travelling sprinkler watering football pitch

With prolonged periods of dry weather, football pitches can become increasingly difficult to play on. In addition, summer seeding or turfing means regular watering is needed to ensure successful establishment of the grass.

Depending on your budget Access Irrigation offer different football pitch irrigation options: travelling sprinklers, which water the football pitch in one or two passes, or temporary watering systems where risers are moved along the football pitch to water a section at a time. Costs vary from between a few hundred pounds for a temporary system to £8,000 for a single pitch sprinkler system and £13,000 for a two-pitch travelling sprinkler system. For more information, dowload our Sports Field Irrigation Guide.

As a company we can design and supply systems but we do not get involved with the installation of the systems.

Travelling sprinkler irrigation systems

For clubs, academies and schools a travelling sprinkler or reel irrigator can be used to water single or multiple football pitches. The irrigation system includes a water storage tank and pump, pipework to each pitch and a single travelling sprinkler.

The travelling sprinkler system consists of a water powered wheeled tractor unit to move the sprinkler along. Before use the unit is placed at one end of the football pitch, and a steel wire run out to a sturdy post at the other end. Mounted on top of the tractor cart is a variable diameter sprinkler. As the tractor unit travels slowly down the length of the pitch, the sprinkler rotates and waters half of the football pitch width.

Generally 1/2 of a pitch is watered each night - with sufficuient available water a single travelling sprinkler to irrigate two football pitches a week.

If cost is a big factor, you can choose to run series of temporary irrigation sprinklers off a tap, providing it has a good water supply. If the football pitch is divided into 12 strips, each 8m wide and spanning the width of the pitch, a line of six sprinklers will water each strip in turn.

You will need to move these sprinklers progressively down the length of the football pitch - generally the sprinklers are run for several hours to place a week’s worth of water (20mm) on each strip before the sprinkler is moved.
