Rugby Pitch Irrigation

Travelling sprinkler for watering rugby pitch

Dry summer weather can mean rugby pitches can become dangerous to play on at the start of the season.

Depending on your budget Access Irrigation can offer a variety of rugby pitch irrigation systems. For example, travelling sprinklers which water the pitch in one or two passes, or temporary watering systems where risers are moved along the pitch to water a section at a time. Costs vary from between a few hundred pounds for a temporary rugby pitch sprinkler system to £5,000 - £10,000 for a multi-pitch travelling sprinkler system. For more information download our Sports Field Irrigation Guide.

As a company we can design and supply systems but we do not get involved with the installation of the systems.

Travelling sprinkler systems for rugby pitches

For league Division One rugby clubs and educational centres, a travelling sprinkler or a reel irrigator can be used to irrigate single or multiple rugby pitches. The system includes a water storage tank and pump, pipework to each pitch and a single travelling sprinkler.

The travelling sprinkler irrigation system consists of a water-powered tractor unit which moves the sprinkler along the pitch. Before use, the tractor unit is placed at one end of the rugby pitch and a steel wire is attached to a sturdy post at the other end. The variable diameter sprinkler sits on top of the tractor unit.

The tractor unit travels the length of the pitch with the sprinkler rotating on top of it, watering half the pitch's width. The sprinkler puts down the equivalent of one week's rainfall, so a single sprinkler could water 3 or 4 rugby pitches per week.

If cost is a big factor, a series of temporary sprinklers can be run from a standpipe, providing it has a good water supply. If the field is divided into 12 strips, each 8m wide and the width of the pitch, a line of six sprinklers will water each strip in turn from a standpipe.

These irrigation sprinklers will need to be moved progressively down the length of the rugby pitch - generally the sprinklers will be run for 2-3 hours to place a week's worth of water (20mm) on each strip before the sprinkler is moved.
