Hedge Watering Kits
Hedge irrigation kits are designed to water newly planted hedge lines to enable them to quickly establish and to minimise plant losses. Planting a hedge is expensive and so any losses can have a significant cost. In addition, hedges are normally planted to provide a screen, so by irrigating establishment is greatly speeded up – the rule of thumb is that a hedge watering system will give 3 years growth in just 2 seasons.
How do you irrigate a hedge?
Hedges are normally watered with a single run of close spaced dripline down the entire length. The Access Permadrip Hedge Kit uses drippers spaced every 0.3m (12 inches) to provide an even distribution of water down the entire length of the hedge.
The pressure compensated drip line enables up to 185m of hedge to be watered in a single line if the water is supplied at one end. For longer hedges an underground pipe can be used to supply the water to the centre of the hedge run, doubling the distance.
How long do I water the hedge for?
On a hot summers day we want to put down 3-4 litres of water for every 1m of hedge length. The dripline for hedges has an output of 3.2 litres per meter, so watering for about an hour a day in the height of summer will provide enough water for the hedge. Obviously you will need less water in the Spring and Autumn.
Can I automate the hedge watering?
Yes, a simple timer can be added to the hedge irrigation system to provide automatic watering for the hedge. Or, the hedge watering can be incorporated into a more sophisticated irrigation system that waters the lawn and garden borders.
