Why choose a 1-zone Bluetooth tap timer?

The Hunter BTT-101 provides a simple way to automate one garden watering system directly from an outside tap. It combines battery operation with Bluetooth smartphone control, so there is no need for mains electricity, a separate controller or complicated wiring.

It is ideal where one irrigation system needs to operate automatically, such as hanging baskets, patio pots, a flower border, greenhouse or small sprinkler system. Once programmed, the timer opens and closes automatically at the required times, making it particularly useful during warm weather or when the garden is unattended.

Bluetooth control from your smartphone

The Hunter BTT-101 is programmed using the free Hunter BTT app on a compatible iOS or Android smartphone. Bluetooth provides a direct connection to the timer without requiring Wi-Fi, a hub or an internet connection.

Watering schedules, run times and manual operation can all be controlled through the app when you are within Bluetooth range. Hunter specifies a maximum communication distance of approximately 10m, although walls, buildings and vegetation can reduce the effective range.

Once a watering programme has been saved, the timer stores the schedule internally and continues to operate automatically without the smartphone being nearby. One smartphone can also be used to manage multiple Hunter BTT controllers.

Timer mode and Cycling mode

The Hunter BTT provides two programming modes to suit different types of garden watering.

Timer mode

Timer mode is used for conventional automatic watering. Choose when watering should start and how long the irrigation system should run, and the BTT-101 will operate the system automatically according to the programmed schedule.

Cycling mode

Cycling mode repeatedly switches the water on and off within a defined watering period. This allows short watering periods to be separated by pauses rather than applying all of the water continuously.

Cycling mode is particularly useful for drip irrigation, seed germination and propagation. It can also help where water needs time to soak into the soil between applications.

What can the Hunter 1-zone tap timer water?

The Hunter BTT-101 is suitable for automating a wide range of smaller garden watering systems, including:

The available flow and pressure from the outside tap will determine how large an irrigation system can be operated. For larger systems, or where different areas need separate watering schedules, more than one watering zone may be required.

For more automatic watering options, see our garden tap timers.

Hunter 1-zone or 2-zone Bluetooth tap timer?

The Hunter 1-zone and 2-zone BTT controllers provide the same convenient Bluetooth smartphone control. The main difference is the number of watering systems that can be controlled independently.

Feature Hunter 1-Zone BTT Hunter 2-Zone BTT
Independent watering zones 1 2
Bluetooth smartphone control Yes Yes
Battery operated Yes Yes
Timer and Cycling modes Yes Yes
Best suited to One automatic watering system Two areas requiring independent watering schedules

Choose the 1-zone BTT-101 if everything connected to the tap can be watered together. If two areas need different schedules or need to operate separately, consider the Hunter 2-Zone Bluetooth Tap Timer.

Hunter Bluetooth tap timer or standard garden tap timer?

Both options provide reliable automatic garden watering, but the main difference is how they are programmed and controlled.

Feature Hunter BTT-101 Standard Garden Tap Timer
Control Bluetooth smartphone app Controls and display on timer
Number of zones 1 1
Battery operated Yes Yes
Programming Through Hunter BTT app Directly on timer
Cycling mode Yes No
Manual watering App or push button Manual override button
Best suited to Smartphone control and easy access to advanced programming Simple automatic watering without using a smartphone

The Hunter BTT-101 is the better choice if you want the convenience of programming and operating the irrigation system from your smartphone. If you prefer a conventional timer with controls directly on the unit, the Garden Tap Timer provides a simple alternative.

Installation and connection

The Hunter BTT-101 is designed to fit directly onto a standard outside garden tap. The BTT-101 has a 1″ BSP inlet with a ¾” connection and a ¾” outlet for connecting garden hose or irrigation pipe using suitable fittings. A quick coupler adapter is also included.

The controller is powered by two AA alkaline batteries, which are supplied, so no electrical wiring is required. Once fitted to the tap, download the Hunter BTT app, enable Bluetooth on your smartphone and connect to the controller while within range.

If you still need to use the outside tap for hand watering, a brass tap manifold can be installed before the controller to provide a separate outlet for a hose or watering lance.

The timer is designed for outdoor irrigation use but should be protected from frost. Before freezing conditions, isolate the water supply, disconnect and drain the timer as necessary and store it in a frost-free location.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Hunter BTT-101 control more than one watering zone?

No. The Hunter BTT-101 is a single-zone tap timer designed to control one watering system. If you need to control two areas independently, the Hunter BTT-201 2-zone Bluetooth tap timer is the better choice.

Does the Hunter BTT-101 need Wi-Fi?

No. The BTT-101 uses Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi, so it does not need an internet connection, hub or subscription. Programming is carried out through the Hunter BTT app when your smartphone is within Bluetooth range.

Can I control the Hunter BTT-101 when I am away from home?

No. Because it uses Bluetooth, you need to be within Bluetooth range to make changes or operate the timer from your smartphone. Once programmed, however, it will continue to follow its watering schedule automatically without your phone being nearby.

How far away will the Bluetooth connection work?

Hunter specifies a maximum Bluetooth communication distance of approximately 10 metres. The actual range can vary depending on walls, buildings, vegetation and other obstructions.

What watering systems can I use with the Hunter BTT-101?

The BTT-101 is suitable for many smaller garden watering systems, including drip irrigation, hanging baskets, patio pots, flower borders, greenhouse watering, hedge irrigation and small sprinkler systems.

What is Cycling Mode on the Hunter BTT-101?

Cycling Mode repeatedly switches the water on and off between a programmed start and end time. This can be useful for drip irrigation, propagation and seed germination, or where shorter repeated watering periods are preferable to one long application.

How many start times does the Hunter BTT-101 have?

The Hunter BTT-101 allows up to 2 watering start times per day in Timer Mode.

What is the maximum watering run time?

In Timer Mode, the watering run time can be set from 1 minute up to 5 hours 59 minutes.

What batteries does the Hunter BTT-101 use?

The timer uses two AA alkaline batteries, which are included. No mains electrical supply is required.

Can I still use my outside tap for hand watering?

Yes. A suitable tap manifold can be fitted before the BTT-101 so that one outlet supplies the automatic irrigation system while another remains available for a hose or watering lance.

Can I manually turn the watering on without using the app?

Yes. The Hunter BTT-101 includes manual operation as well as app control, so watering can be started without changing the automatic programme.

What happens if my phone is not nearby when watering is due to start?

Nothing needs to be done. Once the watering schedule has been saved to the controller, the BTT-101 operates automatically at the programmed times. Your phone only needs to be nearby when you want to connect to the timer or change the settings.

Should I choose the Hunter 1-zone or 2-zone Bluetooth tap timer?

Choose the BTT-101 if you only need to automate one watering system. Choose the 2-zone BTT-201 if two areas need different watering schedules or need to operate independently.

Is the Hunter BTT-101 suitable for larger sprinkler systems?

It is best suited to smaller domestic garden watering systems. Larger sprinkler installations may require more flow than a compact tap timer can provide, in which case a full-size irrigation valve manifold may be more suitable.

Does the Hunter BTT-101 need to be removed in winter?

The timer should be protected from freezing conditions. Before winter, isolate the water supply, disconnect and drain the timer where necessary, and store it in a frost-free location.
