Choosing the Right Type of Garden Irrigation
Garden watering kits for borders
A range of border watering kits including highly efficient drip watering kits, mini-sprinkler kits and pop-up border sprinkler kits for watering with no visible on-bed pipework. Kits include all fittings and pipework and allow the kit to be connected to a hosepipe or to an underground supply pipe.
In addition to the border drip watering kits, we sell border sprinkler packages – these use a single pipe down the centre of the border with sprinklers every couple of metres – these kits work well with low planting or taller trees and shrubs where the soil underneath the planting can be watered.
Garden watering kits for hedges
Hedges are normally planted to provide screening, so it is important for them to establish quickly. In addition, failures of plants within the hedge row look unsightly and can be difficult to rectify. The Access Hedge Watering Kit is designed to water 25m or 100m hedge lines using an ultra efficient pressure-compensated drip line with outlets every 300mm. Water can be brought to the hedge using a garden hose or for automated hedge watering a permanent water supply can be laid and a controller added.
Garden watering kits for lawns
For newly laid lawns, temporary lawn watering kits are available that will ensure the seed or turf establish quickly and consistently – there is nothing worse than a patchy lawn with dead patches. Once established the temporary kit can be used during hot weather to keep the lawn watered.
For a year-round green lawn then a pop-up lawn watering system can be installed using our Lawn Watering Kits. The pipework is installed underground and the pop up lawn sprinklers rise up when operating. A range of kits are available to suit different sized lawns. Lawn sprinklers are thirsty and require high pressures and flows so pump and tank units are available. These also provide compliance with the UK Water Regulations that require lawn sprinklers mounted in the lawn to be separated from the public water mains.
Automatic Watering Options
All of our garden watering systems can have automatic timers added to them to allow watering early in the morning or while you are away on holiday.
For simple kits we offer tap timers to go onto the tap and give one or two outlets. For bigger systems a valve box can be added under the border or lawn to control up to 4 watering zones using a Bluetooth battery timer. For even bigger systems multiple valve boxes can be added and low voltage signal cable used to link these back to a mains powered Wi-Fi enabled controller.

Frequently asked questions
Can a garden irrigation kit connect to an outside tap?
Yes, all of the kits have fittings to allow you to connect to the outside tap, making connection of the watering system easy.
Can I add an automatic timer?
Yes, we sell a range of tap timers which connect onto the tap and provide automatic control of the garden irrigation system.
For bigger systems such as the Pop-up lawn watering kit, valve boxes can be buried in the lawn or border to water multiple areas of the garden.
What water pressure and flow rate do I need?
The pressure and flow needed varies with the kit – full information on the flow and pressure needed will be on the product page. Generally speaking drip kits need less pressure than sprinkler systems.
In order to measure the available pressure and flow, we have a pressure test kit. This comes with instructions on how to record the flow at different pressures.
Is drip irrigation better than garden sprinklers?
For borders, hedges, trees and shrubs, drip irrigation is generally the most water-efficient option because it delivers water directly to the root zone. Sprinklers are normally more suitable for lawns because they can distribute water evenly across a large grassed area.
Water companies may exempt approved drip or trickle irrigation systems fitted with a pressure-reducing valve and timer. Exemptions vary, so always check the current restrictions published by your water company.
Sprinklers are visually more interesting to look at and are easier to install on lawns than driplines.
Can I install the watering system myself?
Yes, the kits are designed to be installed by anyone who has a reasonable level of DIY skills. Full instructions are included and telephone advice is available.
Can the system be extended later?
Depending on the kit, extension packs are available. The limiting factor is the available water supply, but on larger gardens multi-zone controllers are available to zone up bigger areas into sections that the water supply can cope with.
Do I need a pump and water tank for lawn sprinklers?
Pump and tank units serve two purposes – they boost the pressure and flow for larger systems and also provide compliance with the Water Regulations.
Our smaller lawn watering pop-up sprinkler kits will generally run direct from a good mains water supply, but you should always discuss this installation with your local Water Company.
Can the pipework remain outside during winter?
Yes, the pipework can be left outside all year, but it is best to remove the end caps at the end of the season and allow the excess water to drain out – put the drain cap back on to stop bugs crawling in.
Manifolds should be completely drained of water and tap timers should be stored indoors in the winter to protect them from the frost.
