Mist propagation kits include all of the components required to provide automated mist over the bench. High quality propagation nozzles are connected together using uPVC pipe either on risers or suspended above the bench.
What you get in the Mist Propagation Kit
Mist propagation kits also include a controller, wet leaf sensor and a solenoid valve. The wet leaf is designed to mimic the characteristics of a real plant leaf, so when it is dry water is sprayed over the area until the wet leaf detects enough water has fallen. Then the system is turned off until the wet leaf has dried again. In this way, the system is completely weather responsive.
Th controller supplied in the mist propagation kits is a mist-wean controller. Mist Weaning allows the duration between spray bursts to be progressively increased to get the plants used to not being under the spray and to prepare them for moving out of the mist prop system.
Why use Mist Propagation?
Mist propagation is the professional way of rooting cuttings and germinating seedlings using spray to keep the leaves of the plants moist. Combined with bottom heat for a warm root system, the mist prop keeps the leaves of the plants cool and moist. Wet leaf sensor ensures that the mist bursts are weather responsive.
Mist propagation is most effective when carried out in poly-tunnel or greenhouse, the AHDB provide a guide to professional propagation of hardy nursery stock. The spraying system maintains a layer of water on leaves and stems of your plants, ensuring they don’t dry out. For this reason, commercial mist propagation systems are open to the air in the glasshouse rather than being covered over.
In order to successfully germinate seeds or root your cuttings, they must be at the appropriate temperature, have a constant water supply and the correct amount of light. Heat Mats are normally used to provide heat to the root zone. They are very efficient and can be rolled up when the bench is needed for other crops.
The mist-wean controller operates a solenoid valve to turn the mist lines on and off and a wet leaf monitors evaporation, increasing or reducing mist frequency depending on the weather conditions.
