Temporary watering for newly laid turf and grass seed

Use this professional temporary lawn watering kit to help establish new lawns or seeded grass areas. It is ideal for cricket squares, reseeded areas on sports pitches, dust suppression on horse ménage areas or to establish sedum mats on green roofs. These temporary watering kits use sturdy metal sled risers and commercial-quality 19mm (3/4″) hose to connect the sprinklers to the water supply. The design of the sled riser allows the watering sleds and hose to be pulled (carefully) across the grass from one established grass area to another when watering larger grass areas. However, don’t do this on newly seeded or turfed areas.

Low precipitation sprinklers

Low-precipitation sprinklers keep the required flow relatively low, allowing the medium kit to operate from many outside garden taps where sufficient pressure and flow are available. The system can be automated with a tap timer to allow unattended overnight watering. Several watering kits can be connected to a multi-outlet battery controller if larger areas need to be watered with a limited water supply.

Why use a temporary lawn watering kit?

Grassed areas which have been seeded or turfed are very vulnerable to drying out and dying. A new lawn is very expensive to lay, so it makes sense to ensure the lawn establishes quickly. The temporary watering kits can also be used for dust suppression on horse arenas and as a way of watering in sedum blankets on new green roof installations.

Frequently asked questions

Can the temporary lawn watering kit run from a normal outside tap?

A normal outside garden tap will deliver between 600 and 800 litres per hour at a pressure between 2-3 bar.

The STLW kit needs 540 litres per hour at just over 2 bar at the tap. The STLWL needs 900 litres per hour at 2.5 bar at the tap, so it is better suited to commercial water points or pumped supplies.

Which size kit do I need?

The medium STLW kit covers up to 250m² and is suitable for many domestic lawns where adequate tap pressure and flow are available. The large STLWL kit covers up to 400m² but requires a higher-flow commercial water point or pumped supply.

Can I automate the sprinklers?

Yes. You can add a tap timer to the STLW kit, but on the larger kit it is better to use the Hunter Node controller as it allows a higher flow.

The addition of a controller allows watering at dawn, when the conditions tend to be calm and evaporation rates low.

Is the kit suitable for newly laid turf and grass seed?

Yes. The temporary lawn watering kit is ideal for both newly laid turf and newly sown grass seed. Its low-precipitation sprinklers apply water gently and evenly, helping to keep the soil consistently moist without causing excessive run-off, pooling or disturbance to the seed. This supports healthy root development and helps new lawns establish successfully, particularly during warm or dry weather.

Can the system be moved and reused?

Yes. The temporary lawn watering system is designed to be moved easily between different areas and can be reused for future turfing, seeding or landscaping projects. The sprinklers are mounted on portable metal sleds and connected with flexible hose, allowing the layout to be repositioned as required. Avoid dragging the sprinklers or hose across newly laid turf or freshly sown areas, as this could damage the surface.

Does everything needed come with the kit?

Yes. Each temporary lawn watering kit is supplied as a complete package, including the sprinklers, metal sled risers, flexible hose, tap connector and the fittings needed to assemble the system. Simply choose the medium or large kit to suit the area you need to water. A tap timer can be added separately if you would like to automate the watering schedule.
